We run a cutting and fabrication studio in Carabanchel, Madrid. It is my studio: I read your drawing, set up the machine and check the part before it goes out.

The workshop started as mine. I am a designer, and I needed to produce my own pieces properly, so the machines arrived and the space grew around what the work demanded.

My background is fine art: a BA (Hons) from UWE in Bristol, then a master’s in fine art research from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The work has always been design led, and I have always been good at making things. But it is that training that lets me speak the language other creatives are speaking, and build the bridge between an idea and the object. That bridge is usually where a project is won or lost.

The more it grew, the more obvious it became that what I had built for myself was what other people could not find. Not the equipment, that exists everywhere. What is scarce is someone willing to sit down with another creative and talk through what they are actually trying to make. Someone interested in the awkward problem, the piece with no obvious method, the thing that has not been cut before.

And in cutting specifically, almost nobody wants the small job. One offs, a run of five, a prototype that will change twice before it is right. Most shops would rather not. That is a good part of what we do.
